non-System disk or disk error?
By admin on Jun 01, 2010 with Comments 5
Okay, there are no CD’s in my laptop or anything like that. It is a stupid school issued one. It is a compaq and they sent it to me in August. Within two months, the virus program expired because the losers didn’t check it before sending it. They said it would update automatically, and it never did. So now when I turn it on, all I get is a black screen with “Non-System disk or Disk error. replace and strike any key when ready”
Does this mean that I somehow got a virus and it killed my computer or what? I tried everything that geeky articles tell me to.

send it back to your school, because the hard drive is dead, unless you want to change it yourself, but i wouldn’t recommend that because i dont know your schools policy for tampering with hardware in a pc
Double check and make sure that you do not have a floppy disk or a flash drive inserted into the computer first,
And then Enter the BIOS ( usually F2) and look for the boot order or boot priority, Make sure that your HDD ( hard drive group) is in the first position
Depending on your BIOS version there are many ways to do this, If this dosn’t work… possible failed harddrive
Non-Virus related — Technology has prevented the damage virus’ could physically do to your HDD
I’d check the BIOS settings to check the booting order and booting devices. Also to see that the BIOS sees your hard drive.
This generally indicates one of the following:
1. The disk controller board (often built into the motherboard) has failed,
2. The hard drive has failed
3. a cable to the hard drive is loose or failed
4. the operating system is missing from or damaged on the hard drive
I’d stick an operating system cd in, boot and do an operating system repair or install.
Another option is to stick a Linux live cd in and boot up to see if you can see files on the hard drive.
Last time this happened to me – it was a bad hard drive.
Fortunately you can buy a replacement from Newegg.com for (probably) under $100

The error message is caused by the Basic Input Output System (aka. BIOS) of your computer when the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the primary partition of your hard disk is missing or corrupted. The same problem can happen also, due to the boot drive improperly being configured in the BIOS. In situations like these, the stored data on the disk partition may remain undamaged (if you are lucky) but you can’t access them.
You need to repair the MBR to fix this problem. It can be done by reinstalling the operating system (which I did on my laptop just recently), and constructing a new MBR.
Reinstalling the OS is never safe since it requires reformatting the hard disk, and it deletes every data recorded on the particular partition; sector on the disk. The situations can become very serious of data loss if you have stored all of yours on dynamic partitions or primary sectors.
Either one of the two things you need to do, after reinstalling the OS:
You need to recover the data if it is very important for your projects. You can use the Windows Data Recovery software which should come with your Windows OS.
If you don’t have or can’t locate the Windows Data Recovery program, you can download one in the following:
Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery software is able to recover all kinds of data from computers with Windows platform. And it is very easy to use. This program is “Read Only”; which means it is a non-destructive recovery software that salvages data without modifying any original contents. The software is compatible with all Windows OS files, and from NTFS and FAT file system partitions. See the first item in Resources link for more information.
If you still face some sort of problems call: 1 800 237 3901
Reinstall the OS, boot sector is corrupted or bad
